Sales down 5% at Beiersdorf

German manufacturer of the Nivea range of products, Beiersdorf AG, has said profits and sales declined in the first six months of this year as worldwide demand for cosmetics contracted. Sales overall fell 5% to €2.9bn with pre-tax earnings down from €392m in the same period last year to €291m in first half 2009. The return on sales dropped from 12.7% to 9.9%. Sales in second quarter 2009 fell 4.1% to €1.5bn. These figures match the expectations of cosmetics sector analysts. Beiersdorf's share price dipped 1.9% in Frankfurt. The company expects final year sales to be down on 2008.
