Pollution clouds drifting over from China are posing an increasing problem in Korea.
The clouds are formed from fine particles of dust and industrial emissions loaded with heavy metals and noxious chemicals. These can cause health problems when they are inhaled or deposited on the skin. The increasing levels of ultra-fine particles have also been linked to various diseases, prompting metropolitan governments to institute alerts warning people to stay indoors when the clouds approach.
