Europe’s leading speciality oils and fats manufacturer, AarhusKarlshamn (AAK), has secured Europe’s first shipment of sustainably produced palm oil. The oil has been produced by Malaysia’s United Plantations, the first palm oil producer in the world to be successfully audited against the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)’s new sustainability criteria.

United Plantations has been measured against eight principles, supported by 39 separate RSPO criteria, relating to legality of operations, economic viability and social responsibility.

Judith Murdoch, marketing manager of AAK called the shipment’s arrival “an important milestone for AAK”.

She added: “It means, for the first time, that our customers have the opportunity to purchase palm oil which has been independently verified as having been sustainably produced.”

The RSPO spearheads the drive for environmentally friendly production of palm oil. AAK has been working with the RSPO to develop GreenPalm, a recently launched certificate trading scheme designed to promote the sustainable production of palm oil.
