The testing portfolio of Eurofins consists of several methods to measure and to characterise the skin’s moisture level as well as investigating the status of the skin’s natural protective barrier, the hydrolipidic film.
Principle
In order to determine the skin’s moisture level, measurement of capacitance is carried out using Corneometry. Thereby, we investigate the upper layers of the epidermis (stratum corneum). To maintain a soft and well hydrated skin that is free of dead skin cells, an intact barrier function is essential. Measurement of Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is a reliable method to quantify the damage of the cutaneous barrier which is often the origin of dry skin.
In contrast, we also use an indirect method to determine the skin’s level of moisture. Thereby, the status of the hydrolipidic film, specifically the level of hydration of the epidermis, is investigated. This method is based on counting and characterization of corneocytes (dead cells) that are taken from the skin after application of a sticky patch (Corneofix).
