EU scientists call for tighter control of fragrance chemical

Concerns over cancer

The European Union’s (EU) scientific committee on consumer safety has warned the common personal care product scent furfural needs to be more tightly controlled as it could cause cancer. Current rules allow concentrations of 0.036% in fragrance compounds – this should be reduced to 0.01%, proposed the committee.

Meanwhile, the committee has questioned the safety of hair dye ingredients 2,6-diaminopyridine and Soytrimonium Chloride because of a lack of data and studies – members called for more tests and information collation.
