Aveda founder Horst Rechelbacher died on 15 February, aged 72. He founded the Minneapolis based company in 1978, later selling it to Estée Lauder for US $300m.
Dominique Conseil, Global President for Aveda, said: “It is with profound sadness that we say farewell to our founder, Horst Rechelbacher, who left his body following a period of illness. He brought holistic beauty to the industry, connecting hair, face and body as one. He was a life-long student who journeyed around the world gathering knowledge on the benefits of plants and Ayurveda. He pioneered environment responsibility when under his leadership, Aveda became the first business to endorse the Valdez/Ceres principles in 1989.”
