UK’s Vegetarian Society removes shellac from allowed ingredients list

The Vegetarian Society of the UK has revealed shellac is to be removed from the list of ingredients permitted under its vegetarian trademark.

The move is in response to the 2021 publication of a new technical criteria for foods and food ingredients suitable for vegetarians by the International Organization for Standardization, called ISO 23662, whose list of foods of animal origin permitted for use in vegetarian products does not include shellac.
