UK skin care market totals £2.1bn in 2012

The market is expected to reach a value of £2.2bn by 2017

The UK skin care market continued on its upward trajectory in 2012 reaching a value of £2.1bn, up 1% on the previous year, according to research company companiesandmarkets.com.

Within the skin care category, which is estimated to reach a value of £2.2bn by 2017, prestige skin care sales remained buoyant despite the economic downturn, while the men's facial skin care sub-sector also put in a strong performance. In the UK, 42% of men use facial moisturiser, 23% use lip balm, 22% use facial cleanser and 16% use facial wipes, according to the company.

When looking at category market leaders, L'Oréal continued to dominate in the UK accounting for 15% of the market share; the company saw facial skin care sales rise by approximately 1% in 2012 boosted by a number of new collection launches including Revitalift Laser X3 and Lancôme's Visionnaire and Génifique Yeux Light-Pearl.
