Sun care products have seen a huge increase in editorial coverage across the summer months in the UK. According to mymarketmonitor.com, this year has seen a 23% increase in advertising spend for sun care products compared with 2012. Coverage hit an annual high during July, with most editorial coverage dedicated to self tan, followed by sun cream and sun lotion.

Hair health takes centre stage

The growth of sun care during the summer months has led to the rise of products in other categories that hold sun protection benefits. In recent months, the market has seen a rise in UV shampoos and conditioners which — like sun screens for skin — coat the hair with a “protective shield”. According to Karine Jackson, a former London Hairdresser of the Year, deep cleansing the hair is also key to maintaining hair health: “You also need to concentrate on clearing your hair of the build up of damaging chlorine and sea salt which it will have acquired over your holiday. A good, deep-cleansing shampoo like Unite’s Weekender clarifying shampoo will do the trick — then invest in an at-home conditioning product like Organic Colour System’s Aqua Boost to gradually replenish lost moisture.”
