Steel packaging holds untapped potential for premium brands

Advantages include weight and recyclability, says Oekabeauty

The premium beauty market should make more use of steel in packaging, according to German packaging company Oekabeauty. According to the company, the material provides advantages such as weight, recyclability and the ability to be etched, coloured and finished.

“It is used for fashionable jewellery products, so why not use it to increase the value of cosmetic packaging?” said Gerald Oehlhorn, CEO of Oekametall. “Our customers can benefit from our long time experience in the field of metal deep drawing at Oekatech.”

Steel gives packaging a cool touch that cannot be mimicked with metallicised plastics, said the company. It is also three times heavier than aluminium and around seven times heavier than plastics, although this might not be seen as an advantage at a time when many manufacturers are attempting to reduce weight to keep down transportation and haulage costs. Meanwhile, the material can also be almost 100% recycled without losing its original properties.
