Shedul.com, a free booking software for salons and spas, has raised $6m in its latest round of financing.

The Dubai-based start-up helps small and medium-sized businesses to manage appointment booking, point of sale and customer records with its free platform, which has attracted a growing user base of over 40,000 merchants in more than 120 countries, according to the company.

Venture capital companies Middle East Venture Partners, BECO Capital and Lumia Capital contributed to the latest round of Series-A financing for the company.

Shedul's co-founders, William Zeqiri and Nick Miller, developed the idea after Zeqiri needed a last-minute haircut, but had difficulty finding anywhere online.

He later discovered this was because the majority of salons and spas operate without any booking software, as existing offerings were often expensive and difficult to use.

Co-founder and CEO Zeqiri said: "We're solving a critical pain point for small businesses by redefining how they engage with customers through technology."

Miller explained: "We have merchants who have over 80% of their bookings made online by customers.

"The convenience factor increases customer engagement and directly results in more revenue to the merchant."

According to Shedul, millions of bookings are made on the platform each month, and the company is on track to process more than $1bn of bookings by the end of 2017.

Zeqiri and Miller said they plan to use the funds from the most recent round of financing to scale company operations and expand product development.
