Research reveals flourishing organic sector

While the mention of organic beauty products may once have been associated with inefficiency or compromise, today’s perception is very different – and figures suggest consumers are acting on it.

According to a new report published by Transparency Market Research, Organic Personal Care Products Market – Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2014 - 2020, the global organic personal care products market was valued at US$8,360.5m in 2013, due to grow at a CAGR of 9.3% from 2014 to 2020. In 2020, the market is predicted to reach a value of $15,693.7m.

One of the main factors contributing torwards the growth of the organic market – the fastest growing segment in the whole of the global personal care industry – is an increase in health awareness among consumers as they become more conscious of the hazards of synthetic chemicals, namely parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals and aluminium salts. In addition to this, consumers are becoming more ‘eco-conscious’ and aware of the effects of the products they wash down the drain on the environment.

The report notes that shorter shelf life is still a limiting factor to organic products, as non-organic varieties often contain synthetic preservatives, which elongate a product’s lifespan. However, this challenge can be seen as just that; the report highlights how Aubrey Organic has developed a preservative from grape seed extract and vitamins, which can extend shelf life, and notes that if manufacturers continue to explore this avenue, this hurdle can be overcome.
