Organic beauty is a rapidly growing sector – but one that requires greater clarity, says Helen Browning, Chief Executive of Soil Association

How many years has the Soil Association been providing organic certification for beauty?
Our private Soil Association standards launched back in 2001 in response to demand from the industry for a UK certifier’s symbol. The COSMOS standards, a partnership between the Soil Association and four other leading certifiers in Europe (Cosmebio, Ecocert, BDiH and ICEA) was launched in 2010. This standard is seen as the future for natural and organic beauty certification in Europe and further afield, as by harmonising the standard, it should bring the whole industry onto a level playing field.
