Italians under the sun: competent and informed

Online survey shows Italians know their sun cream

Unipro’s website www.abc-cosmetici.it, set up a year ago by the C&T Italian trade body to keep consumers informed about cosmetics, has published the results of a survey conducted among its readers to understand what Italians know about sun protection.

The results, published yesterday, show that over 86% of Italians are aware of the difference between UVA and UVB rays while a surprising 91% know that the term ‘phototype’ refers to skin sensitivity to sunlight. Italians appear less sure about the definition of SPF, the degree of protection from UVB rays that products offer, with less than 50% of web users providing a satisfying answer. However 65% of them are sure about the definition of UV filters.

The survey also found promising results related to usage and behaviour, with 67% of Italians being aware that they need to reapply sun protection after being in water and even when they use waterproof sun protection; for 92% it was a given for granted knowledge that sun protection must be also applied when in the shades and in water while 94% admitted that, in the case of children in the sun, specific precautions are needed.

Altogether the survey reveals a positive image of Italian consumers who appear to know the rules of thumbs when it comes to sun care. The results are rewarding for Unipro and the C&T industry that over the last ten years have dedicated several campaigns to raise awareness about the risks connected to sun exposure and tanning.
