Iggesund Paperboard, part of the Holmen Group, has announced a 65% reduction in fossil carbon dioxide emissions at Iggesunds Bruk, where the company makes its Invercote paperboard. The reduction of 63,000 tonnes achieved in 2009 is equivalent to the emissions from 17,500 cars per year.

“Almost 95% of Iggesunds Bruk’s current energy consumption is from biofuels and we only have one more investment step left before our vision of a paperboard mill totally free of fossil CO2 will be a reality,” states Guy Mallinson, business director, sales at Iggsund.

The company says that its reduction in CO2 emissions has been achieved with a combination of energy savings plus investments in increased capacity for biofuel use. Over half of Iggesund’s electricity is produced by the company itself and 90% of this comes from biofuel. In addition, heat generated by Iggesund’s own production process is ploughed back into the production process and, according to the company, is also used to dry timber in a nearby sawmill and heat 1000 local homes.
