Essential oils on track for REACH registration by 2018

The latest round table held by IFRA identified commitment to registration

The latest round-table to be hosted by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) today demonstrated the continued commitment of stakeholders to ensure that essential oils – in particular lavender essential oil – are registered under REACH by 2018.

The discussion, which was held under the patronage of Eric Andrieu, Member of the European Parliament and Vice President of the Committee on Agriculture, identified that three projects previously deemed key to resolving particular issues with the registration were on track to being solved in everyone's best interests.

The three key issues include: the characterisation of essential oils for the purpose of compiling an appropriate classification; the drafting of specific protocols for ecotoxicity analyses; and the socio-economic impact on the industry in order to find sufficiently acceptable financial conditions.

Andrieu said: “I hope that today has shown that this project is being taken very seriously by all parties, and that the ambitious work plan and schedule – albeit tight – will lead to conclusive results to ensure that essential oils can be registered successfully by 2018.”

REACH is a European Union regulation concerning the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. It came into force on 1 June 2007 and replaced a number of European directives and regulations with a single system.
