Fragrance house expects to distribute finished product from early 2012

Integrated renewable products company Amyris and flavours and fragrances manufacturer Givaudan have teamed up to develop a derivative of Biofene which will be used as a building block for what Givaudan calls one of the most important proprietary fragrance ingredients in its palette. Biofene is the chemical, farnesene, which is produced using Amyris’ bio-based technology and production platform.

The use of Biofene supports Givaudan’s goal of utilising cost effective and sustainably sourced materials. Givaudan ceo Gilles Andrier says: “As an innovator as well as the industry’s largest purchaser of raw materials, we have a responsibility to shape and lead the sustainability approach in the flavours and fragrances industry.

“Continued investment into research and development is a key pillar of our five year business strategy and with collaborations with suppliers like Amyris we can deliver real and impactful solutions.”

Meanwhile John Melo, Amyris ceo, comments on the partnership: “This project provides yet another example of the breadth of products that can be derived from Biofene, our first-to-market renewable building block and our collaboration with Givaudan reinforces our commitment to supply ‘No Compromise’ solutions to the fragrances and flavours industry.”
