More than 360 businesses have signed an open letter to President-elect Trump asking him to continue with the Paris climate change deal, despite previous promises to take the US out of the agreement.
The listed companies, which include Unilever, L’Oréal and DuPont, re-affirm their “deep commitment” to action against climate change and desire for low-carbon energy in the US.
The companies also warn about the possible consequences of pulling out of the agreement. The letter states: “Failure to build a low-carbon economy puts American prosperity at risk.”
The group is asking US leaders to continue with low carbon policies, to invest in low carbon projects and to continue with the Paris agreement to prevent global temperature from rising more than 2ºC each year.
The letter was issued during a UN conference, COP22, on climate change held in Marrakech, Morocco.
The President-elect’s stance on climate change is a cause for concern for some, with Trump previously calling the concept of global warming a “hoax” on Twitter in 2012. During the election campaign he repeatedly threatened to pull out of the 2015 Paris agreement.
However, earlier this month Trump told The New York Times that there is “some connectivity” between human actions and climate change.
The group has also pledged its support for world leaders as they work towards the agreement’s goals and “leverage this historic opportunity to tackle climate change”.
The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.
