L’Oréal USA has announced the opening of a Research & Innovation Center in Clark, New Jersey.
The US$140m development will replace existing facilities that L’Oréal has occupied in the area for more than six decades.
It represents the most significant R&I investment in the French cosmetics giant’s history.
The R&I Center will focus on beauty innovations across the hair, skin and make-up categories, as well as pioneering research in strategic scientific fields, such as green sciences and beauty tech.
Measuring 250,000sqft, the Clark centre will bring together more than 550 employees across all areas of the company’s North America Research & Innovation Division, from Advanced Research to Evaluation and Product Development; it will feature agile workspaces and modular labs, designed to strengthen internal partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The site will also house the capacity to scale formulations through a dedicated team, which it is hoped will accelerate the creation and development of new products.

L’Oréal USA’s New Jersey facility is currently under construction and expected to be fully operational in 2024.
This news follows the August opening of L’Oréal’s second US headquarters in El Segundo, California: a 100,000sqft campus to host the company’s west coast brands.
L’Oréal USA’s main headquarters are located on the west side of Manhattan in the newly-developed Hudson Yards neighbourhood.
