in-cosmetics Asia 2010 broke records as the biggest ever personal care event in Asia outside China. Final visitor figures are still to be confirmed but over 4,700 unique visitors are estimated to have attended the show in Bangkok, Thailand this week (2-4 November), with around 35% of these visiting from outside the host country. Malaysia, Indonesia, India, South Korea and the Philippines were all well represented in the visitor figures.

And they were happy with what they saw. Monica Wong Mee Kim of Leivy Laboratories Sdn in Malaysia was impressed with the technical advancement on show and found the event very fulfilling. “The show has definitely evolved – it’s gone from strength to strength,” she said. “Time is the only issue – there’s not enough of it.” She also mentioned that she would like to see more European companies exhibiting.

From the US, Nu Skin’s Aaron Ballantyne was visiting for the first time. Usually attending only US events, he was there looking for new ingredients, ideas and innovations as well as trends in Asia.

Both loved the Innovation Zone, a Mintel-hosted trend section introduced to the event following its success at the European in-cosmetics and highlighting innovative product launches from around the world as well as new raw materials.

This years workshops, conferences and trend presentations also went down well, and on at least one occasion there wasn’t even standing room left and a few delegates were left disappointed. A regulatory workshop was particularly well received. “People were saying it was too short even though it ran for a whole day,” said Ivan Rahal, marketing manager for in-cosmetics Asia. “It shows a lot of Asian companies are looking at expanding into Europe.”

Exhibiting companies were also positive about the show, particularly after the much quieter event in Singapore last year. “It’s been an excellent show,” said Eckart’s global business line manager cosmetics, Oliver Stich.

“We were glad to come back to Bangkok this year. We didn’t do last year and this is much more central than Singapore,” commented Xie Ziyang, marketing manager, P&G International Operations. “We’ve seen a lot of existing customers but also a lot of new faces and people from new regions, including Nepal.”

“I’m very happy with the show,” said Bart Vanderbiest, director cosmetics international, Sun Chemical. “After last year, I thought that if it wasn’t a good show we’d stop doing it, but I think I’ve changed my mind.”

Next year in-cosmetics Asia returns to Bangkok from 2-4 November. The floorplan for 2011 was already full before the end of this year’s event, but show organiser Reed will of course be extending this.
