A rundown of the biggest beauty deals of 2022

As we start a brand new year, it’s a good time to recap on some of the biggest deals and acquisitions which happened within the beauty industry in 2022. After all, there may well be new developments on some of these deals to watch out for in the coming year

Beiersdorf buys Chantecaille

At the start of 2022, the German multinational personal care company Beiersdorf revealed it had agreed to buy Chantecaille Beaut Inc.The US-based prestige beauty company is believed to be valued at up to $690 million. 

It’ll be managed separately as one of the brands under the Beiersdorf Group umbrella. Later in the year, Beiersdorf also acquired a majority stake in the Belgian-based skin microbiome research specialist S-Biomedic NV.

L’Oreal buys Skinbetter Science

In September 2022, beauty giant L’Oreal signed a deal to buy Skinbetter Science. Based in Arizona, Skinbetter Science is a physician-dispensed skincare brand, whose products are developed with the backing of dermatological science.

Estée Lauder buys Tom Ford brand

Late in the year, after much speculation, it was announced that the rumours were true – Estée Lauder Companies Inc. would be purchasing the Tom Ford brand. ELC was already a long-standing partner of the brand, but this latest deal would make the beauty giant the sole owner – in a deal believed to be worth around $2.8 billion.

Famille C Venture acquires Ilia Beauty

French investment firm Famille C Venture revealed in February 2022 that it had agreed to acquire Ilia Beauty, the clean cosmetics brand. The aim of the purchase is to give the holding company a headstart in the clean beauty category, which is predicted to enjoy significant growth in the next few years.

Unilever acquires majority stake in Nutrafol

In May 2022, the multinational consumer goods company Unilever signed an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Nutrafol. The New York-based company specialises in hair wellness, developing hair growth products that use its patented Synergen Complex. This is understood to be a blend of medical-grade nutraceutical ingredients which target the root causes of hair health, ranging from nutrition and aging to hormones and stress.

Following the deal, Nutrafol will operate as part of Unilever’s Health and Wellbeing unit.

Silverwood Brands buys stake in Lush Cosmetics

The UK-based cosmetics retailer Lush has a new investor, as part of a deal finalised in December 2022. The enterprise company Silverwood Brands plc. acquired a 19.8% stake in the firm, in a deal which covers both brand rights along with research and development.

Lacoste and Interparfums sign 15-year fragrance licence agreement

Just at the close of the year, clothing brand Lacoste signed an exclusive 15-year worldwide fragrance license agreement with Interparfums SA. The agreement, which began with a $95.5 million entrance fee, will begin with the launch of a new perfume line in 2024.
