Profile

Silverson Machines Ltd have released a new, updated Corporate video showcasing the main factory and offices in the United Kingdom as well as their award-winning training centre and apprenticeship scheme.

Since 1946 Silverson has been a leader in the development of high speed, high shear mixers, supplying customers throughout the world in diverse industries such as pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, chemical and lubricating oils.

When you choose a Silverson mixer, you not only get the best quality high shear mixer on the market today, but you also get the advantage of Silverson’s engineering expertise and years of application knowledge in the food, pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetics & toiletries industries.

Silverson experts understand the mixing challenges you face in the cosmetics industry, such as reducing production times, process hygiene, powder/liquid mixing, producing stable emulsions, dissolving powders, disintegrating solids, blending liquids of different viscosities and dispersing and hydrating gums, diluting high active surfactants, thickeners and stabilisers. We will work with you to make sure you get the right mixer for your specific needs. Silverson has the flexibility to custom design and build machines to meet your exact specifications.

For applications such as shampoos and conditioners, lotions and creams, nail varnish and liquid soaps, Silverson has a mixing solution for you.

Antiperspirants & Deodorants

Processing deodorant and antiperspirant formulations presents several challenges. Some of these ingredients can form agglomerates which conventional agitators cannot readily break down. Other ingredients require shear in order to develop their desired properties.

With a Silverson high shear mixer, intermediate stages of production can be eliminated, product quality improved and processing times dramatically reduced. For more information on this application, please review the report here.

Carbopol

Silverson Machines

Carbomers such as Carbopol are water soluble vinyl polymers, used as stabilising, suspending, thickening and gelling agents in many industries. They are widely used in the manufacture of cosmetics and toiletries, including gels, creams and lotions, detergents and air fresheners.

Carbomers such as Carbopol are water soluble vinyl polymers, used as stabilising, suspending, thickening and gelling agents in many industries. They are widely used in the manufacture of cosmetics and toiletries, including gels, creams and lotions, detergents and air fresheners.

These mixing problems can be overcome with the use of a Silverson high shear mixer. For more information on this application, please read the report here.

Creams & Lotions

Silverson Machines

Cosmetic creams and lotions are used for a variety of purposes such as cleansing and moisturising. Suntan lotions are formulated on similar base ingredients but include UV filters such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

The manufacturing process is centered around two of the most difficult mixing tasks: hydration of thickening and suspending agents and preparation of a stable emulsion. The high shear mixing action of a Silverson rotor/stator mixer can achieve these tasks and offers a number of advantages over conventional mixing.

High Active Surfactants

Silverson Machines

“High active” surfactants with a concentration of 65 to 70 percent offer economies in transport and storage costs. They are also more resistant to microbiological attack and contain fewer impurities than conventional surfactants.

Dilution of high active surfactants requires a high shear mixer due to the significant difference in viscosity between the two liquids. A Silverson In-Line mixer has the capability to rapidly blend the water and surfactant, either on a batch or continuous basis. It is also completely aeration-free. Silverson Machines

Lipstick

Lipsticks consist of a pigment dispersed into a mixture of oils and waxes; other ingredients include emollients, pigment dispersants, preservatives and fragrances. Lip salves (or balms) are formulated from a similar base but instead of pigments they contain moisturisers, sunscreen agents or “active” ingredients. For more information on this application, please read the report here.

Nail Varnish

Silverson Machines

Solvent, resin, colorant, plasticiser, suspending agent and filler are all used as ingredients in the production of nail varnish (also called nail polish or enamel). Varnishes are produced in a variety of colors and finishes, such as clear, metallic and pearlescent.

Mixing equipment must be capable of performing a number of tasks; blending fluids of widely differing viscosities, disintegrating and solubilising resins and providing vigorous in-tank movement to incorporate light powders and dense solids. The Silverson high shear mixer can achieve this and dramatically reduce processing time while improving product quality, consistency and stability. For more information on this application please read the report here.

Shampoo

Silverson Machines

Shampoos are a mixture of surfactants, conditioning agents and many other ingredients in an aqueous base.

Manufacturing of shampoos presents a number of challenges; many ingredients require special handling and the entire process must be carried out without aerating the product. Silverson In-Line mixers are widely used for this application. The high shear action can rapidly blend liquids of widely differing viscosities, hydrate and disperse thickening and stabilising agents and emulsify silicone oils, etc., and is completely aeration-free. For more information on this application, please read the report here.

Toothpaste

Silverson Machines

Toothpastes are generally either white abrasive pastes or clear gels. Although the formulations differ they share many common ingredients. These include: liquid base (typically sorbitol or glycerin), fillers and abrasives, rheology modifiers, detergent, active ingredients like fluoride, flavor, sweetener, coloring and preservatives.

Gel toothpastes can be manufactured using a Silverson mixer, and several stages of white toothpaste manufacture can also benefit from high shear mixing. To find out more about this application, please read the report here.
