Siltech operates two manufacturing plants in Canada. Both sites have the capability of scaling up products from the lab through to full 20,000 kg batches.

New Developments

Most recently, Siltech has developed replacements for cyclomethicones, namely Cyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and Cyclopentasiloxane (D5). This effort has resulted in two products that provide the same dry feel as cyclomethicones. Unlike other “cyclomethicone replacements”, our products have a minimal odor, do not break down into other by-products and are cost effective alternatives.

We offer two alternative products, depending on the system being formulated.

Silwax D02 is a low carbon alkyl methicone with the INCI name of Ethyl Methicone. This can be used as a direct replacement for D4 or D5 in various cosmetic products.

A most novel use of Silwax D02 is blending 5% of it into a natural oil such as soybean, safflower or olive oil. Because of Silwax D02’s unique ability to reduce the surface tension of such natural oils, the resulting product again has a similar feel to cyclomethicones. Such a blended product is very useful for formulating anti-perspirant sticks and other products where the use of cyclomethicone is very high. This both reduces the product’s cost and increases the amount of natural ingredients that can be incorporated into the final product. Such a cost-effective formula is shown below.

Silube CR-1 has the INCI name of Polydecene & Cetyldimethicone/Bis Vinyldimethicone Cross Polymer. This product significantly reduces the surface tension of non-polar oils, such as hydrocarbons, making them feel more like cyclcomethicones. Again, formulating anti-perspirant sticks with Silube CR-1 enables the formulator to incorporate a significant amount of relatively inexpensive ingredients. Such a cost-effective formula is shown below.

Procedure: 1. In a side vessel, combine Phase A ingredients. Impeller mix to uniformity. 2. In main vessel, heat Phase B ingredients to 70ºC under agitation. Continue mixing and add Phase A. Bring to 75ºC. 3. Combine Phase C in side vessel, heat to 85ºC under impeller agitation and mix to uniformity. 4. Add Phase C to AB under homogenization. Maintain batch at 80ºC. 5. Pre-combine Phase D. Add to batch under homogenization. Begin cooling. 6. Add Phase E at 70ºC under homogenization. Continue cooling. 7. Pour batch into sticks at 65ºC. 8. Heat-treat surfaces.

Note: The experimental sticks more easily co-solubilized the other ingredients than in control batch.
